Another financial year is now underway and it’s important to start planning; now is the ideal time. In fact, if you don’t plan then you’re setting your business on an unknown course. Have you ever tried to use a GPS without first knowing where you wanted to go? Of course not; the same applies in business.

Mapping out a route for success is essential if you’re to build on the results achieved last financial year.

It’s embarrassing, however: in my youth I decided to travel to Foster without using either a map or common sense. Living in Lake Macquarie I pointed the car north with a general understanding of how long the trip should take. A long way into the journey and a little concerned that I hadn’t seen a sign for Forster I decided to pull over and ask for help. You could imagine the different look on my face and that of the shop owner when I found out I was in Nelson Bay. I’d learnt a valuable lesson that cost me some time, fuel and male ego. But, imagine if this was your business and you had realised that you were nowhere near your destination, how long it would take you to get back on course and what it would cost you.
